Remember when I wrote about the piece about Yemenite Jewelry?
Well, I met Mimi the other day and she was wearing an amazing authentic Yemenite necklace.
The necklace belonged to Mimi’s grandmother, and was passed down to her from her mother after she asked and begged for it for months. Yes it is certainly worth begging for.
I took this picture with my phone so it is not great. Mimi did not want to be included in the picture, which is a shame because she is so pretty and sweet and adorable.
I hope you can make out the flower design on each of the pieces of the necklace.
This is certainly a magnificent necklace.

Pesach (Passover) is around the corner (less than 2 weeks away) and this got me thinking of Jewish jewelry (Judiaca jewelry). You know, jewelry with Jewish symbols and themes. But this time it’s not Chai, Hamsa or Star of David necklaces, or Pomegranate inspired jewelry I’m interested in.
I’m now into Mezzuza necklaces which are also sometimes known as Kemea “houses” בית קמע. Like in a door mezuzah you can put a small mezuzah scroll in the pendant.
Way back when I got my first Mezzuza necklace, they were all in Yemenite jewelry style and were silver and sometimes gold. I think that may be the origin of Mezzuza necklace. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Here are some Mezzuza necklaces to look at.

It is said that Jews arrived in Yemen on escorting the Queen of Sheba king David’s wife home to Africa, where they stayed for more than 2000 years. In Yeman many Jews worked as silversmiths and Jewelry makers. The craft was passed down from father to son and children started as apprentices twisting the silver into shape at a very early age.

Three coins were melted for the jewel itself and the two other coins were the jeweler’s fee.” says Ben-Zion David in his site www.yemenite-art.com.
The Rimon (pomegranate) has been an important part of Jewish symbolism at least sing the first Jewish Temple (Beit Hamikdash) when images of the fruit were woven on to the robe of the High Priest of the temple, the Cohen HaGadol (Exodus 28:33–34). Pomegranates also hung from the top of the pillars At the entrance to the temple and King Solomon used the design of the pomegranate’s “crown” as an inspiration for his own crown (1 Kings 7:13–22). Im Jewish tradition the pomegranate is a symbol for righteousness as it has 613 seads, the same number as the number of mitzvot. The pomegranate is one of the Seven Species of the land of Israel (wheat, barley, grapes, figs, pomegranates, olives, and dates) listed inm the book of Excudus.
By tradition the pomegranate is set on the Rosh Hashanah table and is eaten on the holiday.

The Rimon (pomegranate) shape is also popular in Israeli jewelry. It seems to be more popular in Israeli Judaica jewelry, and less so outside of Israel, maybe because it symbolizes the land of Israel as one of the from the 7 Species. Rimon jewelry comes in a variaty of styles and prices, here are some. The most expencive piece of pomegranate jewelry in this list is a kabbalah necklace with a little gold Rimon pendent inlayed with diamonds and has a capsule of pomegranate oil inside of it.
