Holon Design Museum scheduled to open January 31

Hulon design museum

Hulon design museum ribbon facade

The Design Museum in Holon named “Design Museum Holon” is scheduled to open on January 31, 2010.

Though I looked and looked, I was not able to find any information of what will be exhibited in the meseum other than it  “will serve as a leading hub for innovation in the field of design”.  (http://www.dmh.org.il/)

Still, I am anticipating the opening of the design museum. The design of the Holon design museum building is a work of art in itself. It was designed by Israeli and internationally renowned architect Ron Arad, with a ribbon façade in reds and orange tones.

You can see an interesting gallery of pictures and video of the construction of the building here: Holon Design Museum construction

More information, though not much at the moment, can be found in the museum web site: www.dmh.org.il

The Dreidal shop in Old City Caesarea

Since Hanukkah is nearly here I think this is a great time to post about Eran Grebler’s dreidal house in the Old City of Caesarea. The dreidal house is a shop and showroom displaying Eran’s ceramic dreidal and other works. Saying that I should mention that many of the dreidals in the shop are more tops than dreidals. Dradals have the נ,ג,ה,פ.ש Hebrew letters on then and many of the items in the shop do not. They are more enchanting spinning objects then dreidals, but there are also many actual dreidals there. The crativity of the dreidals in this shop are amazing. Actually most of the dreidals would be better describes as tops than are more dreidals, but all are special and inspiring. While many of the items in this shop do resemble tops and dreydals some actually take some time to figure out what you are looking at. I call there sci-fi dreidals as they look like models of the solar system. He also makes ceramic Hanukkah Menorahs (Hanukiot), chess sets, Seder plates and Mezzuzas. Anyway, Hanukkah is a great time to visit Caesarea, and if you do, you should defiantly drop in and visit this shop. And I cannot think of a better Hanukkah present.

Roche Bobois collections in Israel

We don’t often get to see luxury furnishings around here so this is a great to see and maybe even purchase something of luxury.

Pitaro Hecht, the exclusive sellers of RocheBobois luxury home items in Israel are having an eight day sale between Dec. 11-18.

Three Roche Bobois collections will be on display:

Les Contemporarains – contemporary designs

Les Voyages – eclectic designs inspires by Asian and African styles.

Les Provincilas – classic European designs adjusted for modern living.

The Pitaro Hecht shop and showroom is located in Hertelia Pituach on Medinat Hayehudim street. The website does not work very well, which is a shame especially for such an upmarket brand, but a visit to the showroom is an good experience.

The Roche Bobois  site on the other hand is wonderful and very inspirational. It can provide hours of web-window-shopping pleasure.

Yemenite Jewelry

Yemenite jewelry is characteristic in that it is made of many little pieces of silver, gold or metal connected together or twisted silver wire Filigree. It is said that Jews arrived in Yemen on escorting the Queen of Sheba king David’s wife home to Africa, where they stayed for more than 2000 years. In Yeman many Jews worked as silversmiths and Jewelry makers. The craft was passed down from father to son and children started as apprentices twisting the silver into shape at a very early age.
“In Yemen , a person who wanted a piece of jewelry would give five silver coins to the silversmith. Three coins were melted for the jewel itself and the two other coins were the jeweler’s fee.” says Ben-Zion David in his site www.yemenite-art.com. You can visit Ben-Zion David’s studio in Jaffa and participate in one of his workshops.

Nava Glazer Jewelry

Nava Glazer is an Israeli designer I didn’t know about until recently when I noticed her jewelry in several shops. Nava Glazer jewelry style is of clusters of chains of different types and colors some times combining materials like leather, metal chains and beads. Nava Glazer jewelry that I like most are her colorful combing chains of different colors.

Osnat Alon’s cute plastic map things

If you have been to Tel Aviv’s fun gadget and tchotchke shops (a subject well worthy of a post of its own) you probably noticed Israeli designer, Osnat Alon’s cute plastic map items. I got the bathtub plug and sailboat as a present a while ago. The idea is so fun and witty, I am completely enamored by it.
